Tara Opsal, a professor and current chair of the Department of Sociology in the College of Liberal Arts, has been named the William E. Morgan Endowed Chair in the College. A nationally respected public sociologist, Opsal advances community-engaged reform in the criminal legal system, examining how it produces harm and inequality and developing pathways for change. She is also the director of the Criminal Justice and Victimization Institute at Colorado State University. As Morgan Chair, Opsal will use dedicated time and resources to expand CJVI as a hub for community-engaged, interdisciplinary justice research across Colorado.
Colorado State University’s History Matters project is transforming how local history is taught in Colorado classrooms by using a hyperlocal, place-based focus, the project builds equity-driven curricula that center the under told histories of Fort Collins, Northern Colorado and the state of Colorado.
The Culture of Health Leaders Institute for Racial Healing, a program of the National Collaborative for Health Equity funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has selected Colorado State University faculty member Doreen E. Martinez to join its third national cohort.
The CSU Department of Ethnic Studies received a $100,000 Mellon Grant to create a Distinguished Lecture Series in race, gender, and ethnic studies. The series, which will resume in the fall of 2024, will bring important scholars to CSU for public talks, reading groups, and meetings.
In 2023-24, CSU emphasized democracy and civic engagement for our thematic year. From screen to stage and the Supreme Court to Latin America, our faculty explore issues of democracy.
Colorado State University has a long history of commitment to environmental initiatives and sustainability. In March 2020, CSU expanded their environmental expertise to include social justice with the formal creation of the Center for Environmental Justice.
