The Department of Race, Gender, and Ethnic Studies

In the undergraduate program for the Department of Race, Gender, and Ethnic Studies, students learn about the growing diversity in the workforce. They examine the roles of gender, class, sexuality, and other social differentiation within today’s society. Students learn to identify and understand oppression to gain a deeper and more complex comprehension of the world we live in. Students are empowered through knowledge and critical thinking to realize their own ability to act upon the world.

Who Are We?

We are civic-minded and culturally informed individuals who strive to engage with and strengthen our communities. We are empowered to realize our own ability to act upon the world. We work to identify and understand oppression to gain a more-complex comprehension of the world we live in.

B.A. in Ethnic Studies

The Ethnic Studies major program critically examines the interlocking forces of domination that are rooted in socially constructed categories of gender, sexuality, class, race, disability and national status.

Concentrations

Community Organizing and Institutional Change

Study the history and methods diverse communities used to seek civil rights.

Global Race, Power, and Resistance

Study the impacts of transnationalism, diaspora, and migration.

Social Studies Teaching

Learn to teach middle and high-schoolers with a focus on the histories and experiences of marginalized people.

B.A. in Women’s and Gender Studies

The Women’s and Gender Studies program examines the cultural and social construction of gender, explores the history, experiences, and contributions of women and gender in society, and studies the influence of gender on all our lives.  

Curriculum

Study the influences of gender on all our lives with this interdisciplinary major. 

Department Minors

Ethnic Studies Minor

The program provides an opportunity for students to take a group of courses that address the impact of race, culture, class, gender, and sexuality in shaping institutions, social relations, and identities.

Indigenous Studies Minor

The program provides students with a deep understanding of the theoretical positions and practical applications central to Indigenous ways of knowing and being.

Women’s and Gender Studies Minor

The program prepares individuals for the needs and opportunities of a changing world by building awareness of the range of human experience, potential, and accomplishment that place women and gender at the center of inquiry.
